I change like the moon
From a thick rich brown to a pale ivory
From the sweetest ball of love
To the aggressive suspicious protective being I hold inside
Ready and armed when necessary.
From passionate, energetic and creative
To silent, pensive, observational.
I watch who you are
Before deciding who I'll be for you
And distancing myself enough that I can still be who I am.

I chose, to practice love, where I can
And this flower grows each day a little more
And these petals we give away we do so
So they are passed continuously
Into an ever growing crescendo of compassion
Because these are the seeds we see the need to sow.

I flow like the river
For that is the only way I can continue to visit
All the parts of the world that I came from
The only way that I can embrace
All those who raised me, who gave me, what is me.
And when winter comes
I too fall like the leaves from the trees.
Our bodies will nourish the ground
As we await new life to spring
New leaders to emerge
New minds to share
New fruits to bear.

So whilst fear may take over
For short periods of time
Mostly even death does not scare me
Which I find strangely contradictory
Knowing how much I have learnt to cherish each new sun.

But I won't feign infinite fearlessness
For just like the moon, sometimes I hide and
Certain things create only fear inside
And sometimes I cringe at every move I make and
Every word I speak and
Everything I be
But that's just me.

And I know that
Below the throat I have this pool of warmth and love and peace
And that when I close my eyes I can sink myself into it
And it makes me wonder if I could even be joyous in the dark
Behind metal bars.

Does that scare you?
The unknown
We've always been afraid of what we cannot foresee
And a mother's strength astounds even me and
A woman's many faces may feel phoney or look like insanity but
We follow the moon
Though all our bodies here are pulled by gravity
And if you cared to look you'd see the path we tread
Though I won't ascribe my own changing nature simply to my gender
But to the many people I have known, the many realities I have lived and the many norms in which I've been.

So roll the dice
Play nice
And see what side you'll get tonight.
